Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Dominica hiking vacations, 9 days

Dominica is a little known island in the Caribbean which in many ways is a huge bonus as it remains completely pure and unspoilt by mass tourism. With its superb mountain scenery, diverse flora and fauna, it is paramount that the island is preserved in all its purity. As a prime hiking destination, we are able to promote this island for sustainable tourism whilst at the same time supporting all aspects of the islands infrastructure. Our carefully selected accommodations both operate on an 'eco' basis as well as providing employment for local people, using up to 90 per cent of local produce and offering guests excellent accommodation with minimal negative impact on the island. 'Air conditioning' comes in the form of soft, cooling breezes from the Atlantic, swimming pools are sea water and hot thermal pools and bathrooms use thermal waters pumped from hot springs. Our accommodation on Dominica aims to be culturally and ecologically in tune with the island. We believe that this is important to maintain the island as it is for everyone to enjoy.

By ecological tourism like this to Dominica we are helping to conserve the pristine beauty of the island which could be lost were visitors not to come to enjoy this landscape.

All of our hiking guides which we use on Dominica are locals trained and registered as professional guides, at the same time they have the advantage of knowing their island inside out from birth. This enables our clients to benefit from hikes enhanced by our guides' local knowledge on the island's diverse flora and fauna as well as in insight into how the island works and it's culture.

As well as our guided hikes, we recommend clients take up activities available at the hotels where local people and businesses are used, for example snorkelling or whale watching trips.

Wherever possible we attempt to make the most of local products and services which are available in order to enhance the vacation for our clients. This can include the use of local transport companies or car hire where necessary, as well as the locally owned and run 'eco' accommodation hotels which we partner with on the island.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The Walk to Boiling Lake - it was pretty challenging and strenuous because the recent hurricane had washed away may of the paths (especially those crossing steeper slopes). This made one or two short sections a little tricky, but they were negotiable with care. We'd recommend hiring a guide we used Nahjie - he's knowledgeable and fun to walk with and he has great reviews on Tripadvisor. For benchmarking purposes, we're reasonably fit although now in our 60th decade.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Expect rain! Don't let it put you off though. The walks are good, but if you're unfit - beware, there isn't much terrain that isn't steep.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

I think every small injection of foreign currency will help the locals restore their
livelihoods in the hurricane aftermath. If you hire a car - stop and offer the local's a lift (don't wait for a request - just offer, it'll be appreciated whether they accept, or not). Many people will wave as you drive past, or greet you cheerily as you walk by. The Dominican's are very friendly and it's a very safe country. Don't be put-off offering a lift to men with dreadlocks or tatty clothes (they've probably been farming) - the locals are great. Some of them are a little quiet, but open up if you ask questions about their life.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

It rained more than usual when we were there (an El Nino year) so the walks were very wet and a bit tougher than the norm. Impossible to find fault with the friendliness of the locals.
