Responsible tourism: Chile tailor made vacation, north to south

This tour highlights some of Chile's most unique areas. Travelers will visit small locally-owned wineries, as well as small farming villages with a marked European feel.

Travelers will explore the Alerce Andino National Park. The park is named after the millenary Alerce tree, native to the region, undoubtedly one of the most interesting species of tree in Chile. In this Park some of the alerce trees are more than 3,000 years old! The park consists of 39,255 hectares and is located on the shores of Reloncavi.

Travelers will also have a chance to hike in the famed Torres del Paine National park and stay at EcoCamp. The domes structures are 100% sustainable using solar and wind energy for power as well as composting toilets. Patagonia EcoCamp's design was inspired on the traditional Kawesqar hut resembling and igloo and a dome at the same time. The instinctive engineering ability of the Kawesqar can be easily understood these days. The semi-hemispherical structure of the EcoCamp domes is formed by a number of isosceles triangles that provides uniform distribution of the stress caused by severe wind loads. Wind speed in Patagonia often surpasses 160-180km per hour which makes traditional straight and flat walls extremely vulnerable if the structure is meant to be light. Another significant aspect is that rounded bodies minimize the external surface in contact with the cold environment allowing less exchange of temperature with the warm interiors. Finally, semi-hemisphere gave Kawesqars the maximum internal space in relation to the surface they had to cover with valuable and sometimes scarce animal skins.

We base our hotel selection on the following criteria: being locally owned and operated, built in a sustainable manner, having a desirable location, safety, cleanliness, and ranging in size from 12-20 rooms where possible. This helps to ensure small group size, which in turn helps minimize local impact. Lodges that use innovative practices to improve upon their sustainability and mitigate any environmental impacts are given special preference.

During the tour, travelers will explore small markets in the city of Santiago as well as local family owned wineries along the way. Travelers will also visit a small village in the Atacama Desert where they get a chance to visit with the locals about the fine wool knit products produced in the village.

Travelers will be guided through this epic Chilean adventure by local guides from Santiago and the Puerto Montt area. Once in Puerto Montt, there are opportunities to interact with the local Mapuche people where guest will learn about the culture and traditions of this ancient tribe. As the journey continues travelers visit Puerto Natales, a small lively town on the shores of Seno de Ultimata Esperanza to interact with the locals and enjoy a local meal.
