Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Lapland New Year vacation, Northern Lights

Environment

Harriniva is situated in the wilds of Finnish Lapland, a few kilometres from the village of Muonio. The hotel and its cabins are surrounded by pristine wilderness and operate their own activities throughout the area including the Pallas National Park.

This vacation takes our guests out exploring this landscape and its protection has been taken to account at every level. During the snowmobile safaris here, guests do not travel within the National Park boundaries and follow the marked trails at all times. This prevents erosion and disruption to any local wildlife. The snowmobiles are of the highest quality and are some of the most efficient machines available.

When operating all activities the group sizes are restricted to lessen the impact of any visitors excursions and a leave no trace policy is in place throughout. Any fires that are lit for campfire lunches are done so in designated fire pits or suitable locations and use sustainable wood.

The guides will always try and instill the importance of preserbing the environment here during their activities.

The accommodation we use in Tromso for our guests first evening is a larger hotel but has a strict corporate and social reposnibility programme and ensures that energy and water saving measures are in place throughout their operations.

At Harriniva the accommodation has been built using sustainable timber and in sympathy with its surroundings. It is all low rise and in keeping with the local architecture. Energy and water saving policies are in place throughout and food is locally sourced where possible in order to reduce potential food miles.

All of the dogs at the Sled Dog Centre and Reindeer Farm which Harriniva operate are kept to the highest welfare standards and the animals are treated in line with all local veterinary requirements.

Community

Harriniva itself is a family owned and operated hotel and activity centre, and is of the most well known in Lapland.

The hotel employs a huge number of local people throughout the year and is working hard to reduce the seasonality of the employment on offer. As it offers its own activities they are able in invest in training local people to be guides and providing young people with a viable form of employment in a region which may otherwise see a migration of its youth to urban centres in search of work.

The tourism multiplier effect can be seen in action here as the hotel and activity centre utilise a great deal of local services in order to provide for their guests. Servicing of machinery, transportation for guests, the purchase of local produce from reindeer herders and the like to serve in the restaurants; all provide a vital source of income for the region.

As part of this vacation our guests will get the opportunity to learn about the local indigenous population, their traditions and their heritage. They will also be able to gain an insight into reindeer herding which is still of vital importance to the local economy.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The whole day and evening of New Year's Eve: Reindeer farm and sled ride, lunch in the ice restaurant and the evening's entertainment and fireworks. All of
this and the Northern Lights!!! Best New Year's Eve ever!!! Throughout the week our guide, Alan, was professional, efficient attentive, creative and still managed to be good humoured and patient.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Really, and truly do not worry about your clothes and image. It's all about keeping warm, and you'll be in your snow suit most of the time!

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, I did. I think that in such a remote location, responsible tourism would have a positive impact on the local economy, creating jobs and fomenting local trade.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Excellent Beyond words ...A truly amazing experience, stretching the parameters of my comfort zone. I could never have imagined myself getting into an ice plunge pool, or rolling in the snow in a swimsuit at 18 degrees below zero!! Purely optional, by the way!
