Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Island hopping cruise in Northern Croatia

Environment

The management of these vessels is dedicated to sustainable tourism in Croatia and the crew are passionate about raising awareness of environmental, economic and sustainable tourism policies in Croatia. They believe the promotion of environmental awareness in the region will have a prolonged and positive impact on the livelihoods of the local people and maintain Croatia as a sustainable tourism destination for future generations.

All the food eaten on board is sourced locally, reducing 'food miles' and helping maintain local rural industries.

We visit Cres Island, home to a tiny population of Griffon vultures, and our guests have the opportunity to visit the vulture conservation centre, where all funds are used to help conserve the vultures.

During our visit to Mali Losinj, our guests have the opportunity to visit the The Lošinj Marine Education Centre, where they work to maintain the local marine ecosystem that still contains populations of dolphins and sea turtles.

By staying on our small vessel, we provide the opportunity for guests to stay in some places where building more hotels is either impractical or unwanted, and our ships provide the extra bed-space without the need for new building.

Community

Vast floating blocks of flats, otherwise known as cruise ships cruise straight past some of Europe's most beautiful coastlines with barely a second glance, and without a thought to the places they are missing.

Our vessel, on the other hand, stops at many small ports and towns where we can fully enjoy some of the very best that Croatia has to offer. The money that we will spend in many of these smaller communities will help to preserve the fantastic heritage of these antique coastline.

By leaving our guests free to choose their own dining venues in the evenings, this ensures that a range of small restaurants and cafes will benefit from our guests spending.

Our vessels are captained and crewed by Croatians, and most of the produce served on board in sourced locally, sometimes from the crew’s family members.

The owners and managers of the vessels we work with in Croatia fund and provide a weeks vacation cruise for some of the disadvantaged children of Vukovar, the site of some of the heaviest fighting in Europe since 1945.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

We went from Split to Dubrovnik (not Northern Croatia ). Swimming in crystal clear seas and visiting historic towns was wonderful. I enjoyed sitting out on deck in picturesque harbours before dinner in one of the local restaurants.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Don't pack too much as storage space in the cabins is minimal. Take plenty
of swim wear and a few nice things to wear out to dinner in local
restaurants. Some places don't accept credit cards so take sufficient cash.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

It benefitted the local economy in that every evening we ate in local
restaurants. We also paid to visit a local nature reserve. Also plenty time for shopping!

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Brilliant a really great idea for a vacation - relaxing but also interesting because we saw somewhere different every day. Some places were beautiful
but not enough to for a week so perfect to visit by boat for half a day. Loved the fact that the other passengers were from all over the world.

Read the operator's response here:

Thank you for your feedback and I am glad to see you really enjoyed the trip.
I am a little surprised to to see that you don't think the cruise will have benefited the local economy. The vessel is owned and crewed by Croatians, and all the food served on board is bought locally.
Additionally you will have eaten ashore on most nights providing income for all the small restaurants and cafes that line the ports, and many of which grow their own produce locally,
including wine, cheese and olives.
The vessels pay mooring fees to the small ports that larger vessels cannot access thus helping maintain the ports facilities. In helping provide the local economy with some income from small ships you help to provide the alternative for the small islands who could
dredge a deep water port and invite large cruise ships to dock. The small ships also mean that it is not necessary to build hotels and the related infrastructure in environmentally and culturally sensitive areas by providing accommodation when demand is high.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

The incredible food. Especially the octopus.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Book restaurants before hand to save disappointment and so that you can order the pika dishes which take hrs to cook.
Best restaurants -Split Konoba Feral and Zlatna Ribica. Really good value. Mljet - Konoba Herc the most idyllic setting.
Dubrovnik - Taj Mahal. We never went to Hvar town because of the weather but so glad we didn't as we were taken to Stari Grad which was my favourite place of all. Eat at Eremitaz.
Buy beach shoes as all beaches are stoney
Hire bikes and cycle about.
Check your bottled water is new. We had one with a cigarette butt in. That was the only bad experience.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Amazing and I feel very privileged to have gone.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Being on the water on a beautiful little boat with a fabulous crew and great other passengers. We had a mum and 2, 11 year old girls who were a treat to have on
board. It was very nice to have only 25 passengers. This was our first "cruise" and because of all the above, we really enjoyed this experience. Also the scenery
was wonderful. The whole experience was memorable but one special thing was the swim stop on Cres on our last day. We were the only boat there and we
stayed for several hours. It was beautiful and so peaceful.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Make an effort to make friends with everyone on the boat, including all the crew.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes. Unfortunately we had to use plastic bottles for drinking water. I hope these were recycled.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Very specail.

Don't eat all the lunch if you want a local dinner in town. It is far too much (4
