Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Split to Dubrovnik Luxury cruise, Croatia

Environment

The company that operate this vessel is dedicated to sustainable tourism and is passionate about raising awareness of environmental, economic and sustainable tourism policies in Croatia.

Small ship cruises in Croatia help reduce the increasing pressure to build new hotels in this popular destination by providing a range of sympathetic bed space when and where it is needed. These vessel are like moveable boutique hotels and by moving from port to port they also take the pressure off the road system in some overcrowded towns and cities.

These modern vessels have new engines which use less fuel and give off less emissions than older vessels. By visiting small ports along the coast we limit our cruising time and thus fuel consumption whilst maximising our guests time in port. Larger vessels cannot visit most of the small ports so they are have no choice but to sail straight past.

Community

Vast floating blocks of flats, otherwise known as cruise ships, arrive direct from Venice and spill their loads onto the Dubrovnik dock where they are met by a huge fleet of buses that whisk them for a couple of hours in the beautiful city. These monoliths cruise past one of Europe's most beautiful coastlines with barely a second glance, and without a thought to the places they are missing.

Our vessel, on the other hand, stops at many small islands ports and towns where we can fully enjoy some of the very best that Croatia has to offer. The money that we will spend in many of these smaller communities will help to preserve the fantastic heritage of these antique coastline. Our visits to Mljet National Park & The Benedictine monastery on St Mary Isle will help preserve them by putting a little funding directly into their coffers.

By leaving our guests free to choose their own dining venues in the evenings, this ensures that a range of small restaurants and cafes will benefit from our guests spending.

Our vessels are captained and crewed by Croatians, and most of the produce served on board in sourced locally, sometimes from the crews family members.

Try everything you get the chance to try. Learn at least a little conversational Croatian. Embrace the opportunity to act like a native and absorb a bit of the culture. Don't be afraid, be curious.

In that Croatia's economy is hugely dependent on tourism, and our cruise was both small and focused on local businesses and real people, yes.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Five stars, 10/10, A++.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Swimming off the back of the boat in crystal clear water in bright sunshine and surrounded by a stunning backdrop of mountains. The mix of nationalities, whether by chance or by design, made a huge difference - UK, Australia, New Zealand, Austria, Norway, Northern Ireland and Russia all represented and all (mostly) prepared to share experiences and contribute to the group.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Make sure you understand where the crowds will be so you can plan your visits. Learn the basic phrases in the local language and try them out with a smile.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Certainly helped locals, although if the meals on board had been smaller we'd have spent more ashore. If managed properly then the use of small ships rather than multi-thousand passenger big ships is far less intrusive on local communities.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

The help from Uneasy no settle in selecting the cruise, arranging the add-on at the start of the trip, hotels, rail tickets and transfers meant a stress free vacation.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Having a nautical experience while knowing there were professional sailors at the helm. Each arrival at a new island brought new excitement.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Don't take too much - a carry on cabin case should suffice. And bring a sense of humour - there's many new friends to make. It helps if you like talking:-) Some of the ports can be noisy at night with young party goers so ear plugs are useful if you want to get an early night sleep.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Yes, local people benefit from the on-shore spend and eating out.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Just go - it's a wonderful experience and I really feel grateful to have been there.
Our fellow sailors became the Majestic Moments (named after the boat). There were so many majestic moments I didn't want to leave our wonderful boat and
the jolly crew, plus the fastest Captain on the Adriatic.
