Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Guyana wildlife vacation, private departure

As leaders in travel to Latin America for over 35 years, our focus has always been on providing authentic experiences for our travelers, respecting local communities, conserving the environment and minimising any negative impact of long-haul travel. We are committed to fulfilling these aims and we ensure that all of our vacations reflect this ethos.

We believe that responsible travel should be the only form of travel. From our staff in our London office to our local partners on the ground in Latin America, the essence of responsible travel runs through each part of our operation. This shared commitment to sustainable development manifests itself in various ways: whether its our guides who endeavour to protect the environment by encouraging travelers to make responsible choices, the local businesses that are supported through tourism, or the communities that thrive thanks to interaction and cooperation with our local partners, we take great care to demonstrate and implement the values of responsible travel.

This tour travels deep into the wild heart of Guyana. Little-touched by tourism, Guyana is an incredible wildlife destination and during your vacation youll be immersed in its natural environments and witness the efforts being made to protect them. With vast areas covered by virgin forest, savannah and ancient tablelands, conservation is vital in Guyana and your accommodation throughout your vacation reflects this.

For example, some of the most impressive instances of thriving rainforest ecology can be found at the foot of the Pakaraima Mountains where the Surama Eco-Lodge is located. The lodge and its abundance of flora and fauna are well-managed and conserved by local Amerindian residents who accompany guests on hikes, river canoe expeditions and visits to community schools and traditional events. Cooks, drivers, farmers, fishermen, construction and maintenance workers who work directly or indirectly with the lodge are all recruited locally, and all have great pride in their tourist-orientated community project.

Youll also stay at Karanambu Ranch, home of Diane McTurk who is widely known for her work rehabilitating orphaned giant river otters to the wild. Karanambu has a long history of welcoming visiting naturalists and television crews, and both David Attenborough and Gerald Durrell are amongst the ranchs previous guests so youll be in good company here.

Our dedication to responsible travel does not end with our vacations: we offer all of our travelers the opportunity to offset the carbon emissions generated by their trip and we donate all of the funds raised into our chosen projects whose aims are to reduce carbon emission and to help alleviate poverty. From installing solar panels in Panama to planting maya nut trees in Guatemala, we are proud to support projects which benefit local communities across Latin America. Our current project, the Atitln stove programme, supplies fuel-efficient stoves to communities around Lake Atitln in Guatemala in an effort to protect the environment and improve living conditions in the region.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

It is very difficult to identify as a highlight one single part of such an overall amazing experience. However, the time we spent at Surama Eco Lodge was
incredible. The natural beauty and the opportunity to meet a real community made this something we will remember forever.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Take time to prepare and to travel light. If you are looking for an opportunity to be just another anonymous tourist - this is definitely NOT the vacation for
you. Be prepared to be welcomed as a friend, to meet open-hearted and authentic people, to be made to feel very special.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

A big yes to all these elements.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Guyana is more of an experience rather than a vacation. Guyana has the potential to change you, to help you see everything from a different perspective. This
was definitely the trip of a lifetime.
