Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Rajasthan, off the beaten track tour

Environment

Responsible travel plays a key role in our company’s vision and we are promoting this concept among our customers. Before you set off we will provide you with a Know Before You Go that gives you plenty of tips about the country, with cultural information and phrases to help you get by. Also our Uneasy no settleer document has useful info on local customs to ensure mutual respect between our customers and locals.

We ensure to promote train journeys where possible, and although most of our trips through India are done in a private car with driver, we always encourage our clients to use local transport (rickshaws, tuk-tuks and metro) to get around the cities they are staying at, or just walk where possible to avoid traffic and enjoy the beauty around them!

We actively encourage our travelers to visit more remote, off the beaten track places, more of them are now becoming sustainable using solar power, recycling water and initiating local projects that benefit locals. In Chandelao, the owner of the hotel has set up a school for children and workplace for local women who get paid a fair wage working in the afternoon and take reading and writing classes in the morning.

We start the responsible journey from our office in Brighton by providing our team with a healthy locally-sourced daily lunch and recycling food-waste. Our office is virtually paperless, and the paper that we do use comes from the company we recycle through, creating a closed loop.

We actively encourage our travelers to refill water bottles while they are away and promote hotels that have water station in place and use solar power

Community

In India, we make sure to support the local community as much as we can and encourage our customers to interact more with the locals and learn their customs from them. I always share the best local places to stop for drinks and food with my clients base don my own experience - some of them are not to be missed as people from all over India travel there specifically to try the local delicacy!

We offer smaller-scale authentic accommodation as opposed to chain hotels, and encourage our clients to visit some less known location, where the locals depend on tourism. This also gives you an insight into the real rural life and it's a great way to completely immerse into the local culture and meet local people.

Touring across Rajasthan is a fantastic opportunity to experience the famous Indian hospitality. All the hotels we offer are small havelis (merchant's houses) that have been converted into small boutique hotels where owners take part in running the business and give attention to every guest they welcome.

During this trip, you will visit a beautiful fort, that has been inherited by the current owner from her Mother. This beautiful hotel gives local people from the nearby village an opportunity to earn their living. Tthe owners are also taking an active part in village life and are supporting educational programmes for the local kids.

The activity that we offer during the visit to the fort is an evening ride on a traditional ox cart which proves to be a great fun for both travelers and locals! While riding down the narrow streets of the local village, you make different stops to meet local people who are very friendly and welcoming. This is also a perfect chance to see local craftsmen and purchase locally-made souvenirs making sure the money goes directly to the community.

Most of the travel is with a local driver, these are paid a fair wage and enjoy good working conditions with regular breaks between tours.

We have a charity project that we support in each of our destinations and everyone who books our trips is more than welcome to contribute to the charity of the country they are traveling to. In India, this project is Odanadi, a pioneering anti-trafficking organisation based in Mysore, South India, working for the rescue, rehabilitation and reintegration of trafficked women and children. For the past 20 years, Odanadi has been committed to providing a safe haven for survivors of human trafficking, sexual exploitation, slavery, domestic abuse and destitution. Odanadi currently runs two residential rehabilitation centres in Mysore, housing up to 85 women and young people at any one time.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Our good english speaking and informative guide in Sri Lanka

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Change from a standard car especially if you are small India was very disappointing with this operator. Traveling for 5 plus hours in a standard car with only a driver (no guide) who could barely speak English clearly and had not the knowledge of where you were traveling through eg fauna, land growth etc beggars belief, in a country we were fascinated with this was the biggest disappointment of all as after all they are a vacation company?? Also it felt like the hotels had been say screwed down on price so they looked good but we somehow we always got the room looking onto a brick wall or next to the noisy reception or the food in the restaurant was poor. Only Fort Bali provided all that you could have wished for on vacation. I was dreading Sri Lanka but perhaps it was because we complained but the operator who looked after us were great and the hotels an improvement. Sirria our guide was superb

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

NO

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

I am rating only INDIA because it almost spoiled the rest of our vacation and you really need to appreciate a good English speaking guide/driver is essential. It
would also benefit them as i am sure the tips would increase!

Read the operator's response here:

Hello Heather,

Thank you for your feedback and letting us know about your time in India and Sri Lanka. I am so glad you had a superb guide and you enjoyed Sri Lanka very much. It is such a shame your experience in India was not as positive. I am so sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your driver and your hotel rooms as we certainly always strive to show you the best of every country we offer.

We take your feedback very seriously and I will certainly contact our local partners regarding your driver as we always want you to feel informed about the destination and have the opportunity to learn and grow from your travels. In India for your long journeys you have a driver, rather than a guide. As we use small locally run accommodation as well as local guides and drivers, we believe the local communities very much benefit from our trips as this money will go back into the Indian economy. Also, with every trip we book we also give a donation to a local charity.

We will also pass on your compliments about your guide Sirria, to our local partners. Thank you very much for taking the time to provide your feedback, it is always valuable for us as we are always wishing to improve our services.

With kind regards,
David
