Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Bush skills course in Botswana

The guiding school is run completely off the grid. Students accommodation is in tents with solar lighting and bucket showers with water heated from communal tank over a fire pit. Meals are all cooked over bush fires and there is minimal waste. All recyclable products are taken back to Maun to be appropriately dealt with.

Conservation runs through everything that is taught at the school. Graduates from OSG leave with a greater understanding of the environment and how to protect and respect it.

The learning experience is influenced by the natural beauty of the area and the habitat diversity. Kwapa has a combination of river channelís, floodplains, lagoons as well as riparian woodland, savannah, mopane scrub, climax mopane woodland and grasslands.

The area is part of a wilderness that stretches unfenced for hundreds of thousands of square kilometres through Moremi Game Reserve, Chobe National Park, the Caprivi Strip of Namibia, southern Angola and southern Zambia.

Kwapa Guide Training Camp has good numbers of elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, kudu, impala, reedbuck and other herbivores. Rhinoceros are making a come-back in the Okavango due to some phenomenal conservation programs. Predators include lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, serval, caracal, african wildcat, black-backed jackal, side-striped jackal, spotted hyaena and other smaller predators.

The area has over 300 species of birds and the list is still growing. Some of the highlight birds are wattled crane, lesser jacana, long-crested eagle, saddlebill stork, green-capped eremomela, greater painted snipe, coppery-tailed coucal, luapula cisticola to mention but a few.

Our sponsorship model allows local students to study to become fully qualified guides that otherwise would not be able to afford the training. For every course that is run a place is available for a student from the local community which is funded through the income received by International participants.

This is a two-way beneficial arrangement as International participants learn a great deal from the local students including a genuine insight into their customs and culture and the surrounding environment. This can also lead to a greater understanding of cultural differences and can help students that wish to travel further in Africa. Many great friendships are also formed at the Guiding School.

Locals are employed by us wherever possible. There is also an excellent relationship with the local community, who understand and appreciate the benefits to conservation in the area that the Guiding School provides.
