Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Family summer vacation in Finland

The Area where the tour takes place is a national hiking area established mainly for outdoor recreation. Though it is not a nature protection area the Hossa hiking area is part of the Natura 2000 network and therefore supports the sustainable use of and interference with natural resources.

All activities undertaken during the tour are un-motorised and carried out with the lowest impact on the environment possible. We only use marked hiking trails and designed spots for the campfires. We are paying a compensation for each visitor to the Forest and Park Service, which is responsible for the nature conservation and hiking areas visited.

The food is typical Finnish and local ingredients are used as much as possible. Picnic lunches are taken outdoors but disposable products are avoided as far as possible. Plates are usually plastic and cups wooden. Cutlery is disposable but eg. tea spoons are wooden which is eco-friendlier choice as plastic ones. Tap water is drinkable throughout Finland and we recommend participants to bring re-fillable water bottles. Therefore there is no need to buy bottled water.

When the clients are participating in the (optional) bear watching, they get to know the wildlife of the area. This leads to a better understanding and therefore creates sufficient basis for protecting the environment, following the motto: We protect only what we know"

The Hossa hiking area is designated for nature tourism and therefore the locals benefit from all tourists coming to that area. Many locals also offer sustainable tourism services such as b&b accommodation or program services such as canoeing tours, fishing excursions etc. When carrying out this tour we co-operate with many companies that are all small and local. Eg. the providers of accommodation and catering services, program services, transportation and equipment rental benefit straight from the co-operation.

One example is the visit at the reindeer farm. Reindeer husbandry has a very long tradition in this area but the number of reindeer herders is decreasing. The remaining herders have to find alternative incomes, which is e.g. reindeer farm visits for tourists. This attracts tourists to the area, they get involved in local culture and the herders earn financial benefits from this. Moreover it is a natural attraction which does not require many changes at the existing farms and therefore also provides economical benefits to the region.
