Responsible tourism

Responsible tourism: Istria multisport vacation in Croatia

Environment

We travel by kayaks, bikes and on foot and reduce the use of motorized vehicles to the minimum. Our guides make sure not to leave anything behind or disturb the local flora and fauna. Croatia is still lucky enough to have supplies of clean, clear water and we take this seriously - we never use motorboats on our rivers. Traveling on bike produces no carbon footprint, unlike using all-terrain-vehicles, moto-cross bikes, or other modes of industrial transportation. Also traveling on bike slows your pace down so you take in more of the nature that surrounds you. By buying local products you are supporting this country's economy and helping Croatia stand on its feet again! We consider it our responsibility to lead efforts to maintain and preserve the integrity of this fledgling sector by petitioning the introduction of tighter controls over the use of the country’s natural resources.

Hundreds of thousands tourists have visited this area, but we bring bicycles, canoes and kayaks that take our friends to places that only a couple of hundred of those get to see and experience: best preserved, remote, quiet and most romantic.

Our moto is: take only pictures, leave only footprints. (Or not even that - paddle!)

Community

The 1990-ies war in Croatia has left many communities without infrastructure, jobs and even job opportunities. People were reluctant to move back to their areas because lack of prospects. We are very proud that we have seen the opportunity in these places and started working with the locals helping them rebuild and find use of the buildings. Some of the areas we visit are off the beaten track and have kept their authenticity. Other than that we buy food from the small farms and work on developing responsible waste management by stimulating waste recycling.

We try to use private accommodation in local communities wherever possible and are proud to say that we have brought jobs and business to many places where they were needed. Our guides and drivers are local, which benefits both the community and our guests, as they are offered unique insight into the area where they are traveling.

By booking this trip you bring much needed income to the people who are still recovering from the war-torn years as this was the area severely affected by war. This trip ensures that the local people benefit as much as possible in the form of jobs and provision of accommodation, and most of all that negative environmental impacts are kept to the minimum.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

There were several highlights, but having a simple coffee in a jazz cafe in Bale, a beautiful medieval hill town, stands out.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Take plenty T-shirts, including two long-sleeved ones. When kayaking, the T-shirt will get wet with sea water and you will want to rinse it afterwards. So you need another dry one for the next day. Cycling gloves are important as well.

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

Very much so. We ate local food, drank local wine, and stayed in rooms owned by locals.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

Very enjoyable.

The recommended 150 a day spending money probably is not enough if you want to take additional trips and like to drink.

Yes I think that it increased tourism in parts that may be would not have it.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your vacation?

Views from the mountains across to the Adriatic coast, walking in the Una River National Park in Bosnia, drinking Turkish coffee made on a small fire in the mountains, swimming in the icy clear green water of a small river and the majestic beauty of the Plitvice Lakes.

2. What tips would you give other travelers booking this vacation?

Make sure you have strong supportive footwear-as advised on booking, a lightweight day sac and lightweight kagoule

3. Did you feel that your vacation benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?

We spent 3 nights staying in rooms in the homes of local people in a very small village. Breakfast and the evening meal were provided cooked by people from the village in a wooden purpose- built barn in the centre. All guests from the different houses ate there together.

4. Finally, how would you rate your vacation overall?

The walking tour was extremely well organised and our guide helpful, friendly, experienced and knowledgeable. The vacation was a very good combination of the major attractions of the national parks and interesting off the beaten track walks only possible with local knowledge. Although we covered a vast area walking remained the main part of the day. We were a small friendly group-5 plus
our guide, and I never felt over-organised (something I dislike). We were met from different parts of Croatia at the beginning of our tour and taken to our choice of airport/bus station (within reason) at the end making it very easy to add a few days of independent travel to the vacation. Our guide incorporated a visit to a brown bear sanctuary which we had expressed an interest in and substituted a walk through some spectacular caves on a day when the weather meant the planned walk was not a good option. The vacation felt relaxed, friendly and adaptable and was a great way to see beautiful unspoiled areas of Croatia. I would not hesitate to choose this company again.
